Module 7 · 7 lessons available

Self, understanding and practice across Asia

Follow how Asian thinkers revised inherited arguments about experience, the self, interpretation and the practices of a good life.

Part 3 · Interpreting traditions, questioning authority

An inherited teaching can become the starting point for a new dispute. This module asks how thinkers revise the accounts of experience and self they inherit, and what those revisions mean for study, conduct and religious practice.

The readings fall into four groups. Three Buddhist lessons begin with experience, follow teachings into new languages and practices, and end in Tibetan debate. Two Vedānta accounts ask how the self relates to ultimate reality. Two Confucian lessons connect knowing with acting and follow reinterpretations in Korea and Japan. The final lesson asks how devotional practice relates to equality. Earlier lessons on South Asia and China provide useful background, and later modern readings return to the question of how traditions change.

Time, place and approach. These South Asian, East Asian and Tibetan histories overlap, and the sequence moves back in time at several points: at the start, after the previous module; from Tibetan debate to Vedānta; and from East Asian interpretation to devotion in northern India. The order follows questions rather than lines of influence, which lets us compare histories that do not fit a single timeline.

Useful preparation

The linked lessons cover Buddhist not-self, emptiness, textual authority and humane learning; return to whichever one helps with the question at hand. You do not need to memorize the earlier schools or their terms, because each lesson recalls what it uses.
